Retail Improvement District
The Retail Improvement District (RID) was the third city improvement district to be established in Johannesburg. The RID has been in operation since 1 June 1997 and was finally legislated in 2005. It consists of five city blocks in the main retail area of the inner city. The RID was established to make this part of the city safe, clean, friendly and attractive, particularly for shoppers. The RID boasts retail outlets such as Edgars, Woolworths, Game, Truworths, Foschini, Markhams, Green and Richards, Lewis Stores, Cuthberts and many more smaller retail outlets. The RID subcontracts to provide a fully equipped and uniformed security force. The squad comprises 18 patrol officers and one controller. Coordination is done from a control room situated in 90 Market Street, which is in radio and telephone contact with the security force officers and the police. They also play a vital role as district ambassadors and since the establishment of the district have assisted the public with thousands of enquiries related to shops, hotels, public facilities, transport, banks and tourist attractions. The RID subcontracts to provide cleaning services supplementary to those provided by the local authorities to ensure a clean environment. The team, easily recognisable in their distinctive green and yellow uniforms, comprises ten cleaners and one supervisor. Click here to view a complete list of members. The following services are or can be provided in a city improvement district:
The RID is located between Jeppe Street in the north, Harrison Street in the west, Commissioner Street in the south and von Brandis Street in the east. The RID management team ensures that the quality of services provided and the vision of the area is implemented. If you have comments, questions or queries please contact them.
