Xenophobia is alive and well

Prof. David Everatt, the Director of the Gauteng City-Region Observatory, said that this is the first report by the GCRO and it reflects the city through the eyes of its people. It is a mixed bag of results that are important in providing the province with reliable data that will inform its development planning.
“The Gauteng City-Region remains a place of contrasts, of wealth and poverty, of reconciliation and xenophobia suggesting that the key challenge facing all of us is equality and lessening the gaps between the extremes.”

Nomvula Mokonyane, Premier of Gauteng, was positive about the challenging findings and said: “We welcome the results of the GCRO as they are, because we believe that we have been provided with the naked truth about our province which will help us to improve our services for our people. We intend sharing it with our municipalities and the private sector so that everyone can appreciate its implications.”

Established in 2008, the GCRO is a collaboration between Wits, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the Gauteng Provincial Government that has made great inroads into the province’s research capacity. The GCRO is a research centre dedicated to analysing and benchmarking the Gauteng City-Region against other world-wide city regions. The Observatory also provides policy guidance on improving the sustainability, growth path and cohesion of the city-region.
