South Western Improvement District

The South-Western Improvement District (SWID)is characterised by financial institutions and corporate head offices. It was established as a voluntary city improvement district in September 1996, the second improvement district to be established in Johannesburg. It was legislated in January 2004. It covers 24 blocks in the South-Western part of the city and incorporates the Standard Bank Superblock Complex and the head offices of various organisations including the Chamber of Mines, BHP Billiton, and SA Eagle. Other organisations within the district include the African National Congress in the Walter Sisulu House, the Rand Club, Samancor, Anglo Platinum, Anglo Operations, South African Revenue Services, National Union of Mine Workers, National Government, Provincial Government, Engineer Industries Pension Fund, Peoples Bank Head Office, Johnnic, and many others.

The SWID subcontracts to provide a fully equipped and uniformed security force. The squad comprises 42 patrol officers and one controller. Coordination is done from a control room situated on the ground floor of the Metal Industries Building, 21 Frederick Street corner Sauer Street, which is in radio and telephone contact with the security force officers and the police. They also play a vital role as district ambassadors and since the establishment of the district have assisted the public with thousands of enquiries related to shops, hotels, public facilities, transport, banks and tourist attractions.

The SWID subcontracts to provide cleaning services supplementary to those provided by the local authorities to ensure a clean environment. The team, easily recognisable in their distinctive green and yellow uniforms, comprises fifteen cleaners and one supervisor.
